Core Requirements for ZEB Certification
ZEB Certification Must Be Understood Through Three Key Requirements
ZEB certification is not achieved simply by reducing energy use. A building must demonstrate strong energy performance and be able to continuously manage actual operational data. In other words, ZEB certification requires compliance with either Requirement 1 or Requirement 2, plus Requirement 3.
- (Requirement 1 or Requirement 2) + Requirement 3
Requirement 1
Energy Independence Ratio Standard
Evaluates how much of a building’s energy consumption is self-generated through renewable energy systems such as solar power.
" How much energy can the building generate and use on its own? "
" What percentage of the building’s energy use is produced on-site? "
Requirement 2
Primary Energy Demand Standard
Evaluates the annual energy required for building operation, including heating, cooling, hot water, lighting, and ventilation.
" How little energy does the building itself use? "
" How much energy does our building use over one year? "
Requirement 3
Building Energy Management System Installation Verification
Verifies whether a system is in place to measure, monitor, analyze, and manage energy consumption.
" Can energy use be measured, monitored, analyzed, and managed? "
" Can the building continuously manage whether energy is being used efficiently? "
ZEB Certification Requirements Explained with Examples
· With substantial solar generation, it is easier to satisfy Requirement 1 (Energy Independence Ratio).
· However, certification is still difficult without a measurement and management system.
→ That is why Requirement 3 (BEMS / remote metering) is essential.
· Because the building itself uses less energy, it is easier to satisfy Requirement 2 (Primary Energy Demand).
· Even so, certification is still difficult without an operation, metering, and management system.
→ Again, Requirement 3 is essential.
Why Is Requirement 3 Important?
In ZEB evaluation, the five core energy categories, heating, cooling, hot water, lighting, and ventilation, are essential data points. Even if a building achieves a high energy independence ratio through sufficient solar power, or maintains low energy demand through strong insulation and efficient systems, ZEB certification preparation is not complete without a system that can measure and manage real operational data. ZEB certification is ultimately achieved only when both building energy performance and operational energy management are in place. That is why, when preparing for Requirement 3, separating these five energy categories by equipment and circuit makes monitoring, analysis, and operation much easier.
Why Are the Five Energy Data Categories Important?
Heating · Cooling · Hot Water · Lighting · Ventilation
ZEB evaluation is fundamentally based on five key energy consumption categories. When preparing for Requirement 3, these data points should be separately measured by equipment and circuit. The more clearly the data is separated, the easier it becomes to monitor, the more accurate the analysis becomes, and the more efficient ongoing operation becomes.
Where Does SENSWAY Help Most?
